Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

Martijn van Nieuwenhuyzen is part of the curatorial team that devised Taking Place, one of the exhibitions at the Temporary Stedelijk (until 9 January). Van Nieuwenhuyzen was trained as a journalist and art historian and is curator at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam since 1995. At the Stedelijk he curated solo exhibitions by a.o. Gabriel Orozco, Matthew Monahan, Gilbert & George and group shows such as Wild Walls (1995) (Douglas Gordon, John Currin, Kai Althoff a.o.), Peiling 5 (1996) (Bik, Fillingham, VanderPol, Job Koelewijn, Tariq Alvi a.o.) and From the Corner of the Eye (1998) (Cerith Wyn Evans, Wolfgang Tillmans, Lukas Duwenhögger a.o.).
Since 1999 (until 2006) he has directed the Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (SMBA), the museum’s project space in the centre of Amsterdam. At SMBA he curated projects and exhibitions by emerging artists such as Manon de Boer, Urs Fischer, Melvin Moti, De Rijke/De Rooij, Viktor & Rolf, Julika Rudelius, Saskia Olde Wolbers, Ryan Gander, Tino Sehgal, Keren Cytter and Germaine Kruip.

From 2000 to 2003 he was Associate Director of Exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) London, where he oversaw the exhibition programme in team with three international directors and curated the exhibitions Aernout Mik - 3 Crowds, L.A. Raeven - Wildzone, De Rijke/De Rooij - 3 Films and Beck’s Futures 2.
In 2005 he was commissioner of the film installation Mandarin Ducks by De Rijke/De Rooij for the Dutch Pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale.

At the Stedelijk Museum CS, the temporary premises of the Stedelijk between 2004 and 2008, he curated solo exhibitions by Tino Sehgal, Saskia Olde Wolbers, Wolfgang Tillmans, Paul Chan and Allora & Calzadilla. He also initiated and programmed the Docking Station project space at SMCS where he introduced the work of a.o. Mario Garcia Torres, Danh Vo, Ulla von Brandenburg, Daria Martin, Josef Strau, Mark Boulos and Alexandra Bircken to the Dutch audience.
Van Nieuwenhuyzen has been correspondent for Flash Art (Milano) en Artscribe (London) and has edited and produced several films on visual artists. He has written essays for publications on a.o. Marlene Dumas, Rob Scholte, Aernout Mik, Gabriel Orozco, Allora & Calzadilla.
